Oh my goodness, are we living the same life? My husband (and kids) and I left our church of 15 years last summer. After a lifetime of Baptist and Evangelical spaces, one Sunday when everyone had colds but me, I decided to visit our closest Episcopal church. I chose it out of curiosity and also because it seemed like every writer I was resonating with recently was coming from an Episcopal background. After three and a half decades of male-led church experiences, I hung on Rector Susan's every word. I was crying before she was even halfway done, willing her to come talk to me when the service was done. She beelined for me, and I just cried. She invited me back to church, BUT ALSO INVITED ME OUT TO COFFEE. While we didn't choose to go to that church in the longterm for a variety of reasons, the hour she and I spent at the coffee shop is still with me. Some of the words and insights she had into my faith journey still act as life rafts for me today. I loved reading about your experience, and I guess, three cheers for female reverends and rectors within the Episcopal church who GET IT.

I'm so glad you had this experience. I'm so glad the church smelled like an old library. And I hope you take her up on going out to coffee. xo!
